My name is Karla Ruacho, and I was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, on May 30, 1981. Currently married, I am a mother of four—three boys and one girl. I have resided in Indiana for almost 20 years, with the past 13 years spent in Edinburgh, near Columbus.
Ever since my time in Mexico, I’ve held a deep appreciation for helping people, which motivated me to pursue a degree in Social Work. Circumstances led me here, where I’ve been fortunate to contribute to my community in various ways.
Around 12 years ago, an opportunity arose to enroll my daughter in a free program in Columbus, part of FSP (Family School Partners), aimed at aiding her developmental progress before school. This experience sparked my journey of aiding others by sharing the knowledge I gained. Soon after, I was offered the role of Vecina de Enlace (Liaison Neighbor) alongside my coordinator, Mayita (Maria Rising), marking the beginning of my involvement in the community.
As my engagement increased, so did the avenues to help. Initially, I assisted neighbors with interpretation, doctor appointments, filling out applications, navigating child-related tasks, and interpreting at the community office. Later, I initiated Homework Help Driftside, a program supporting local children with their studies. This effort paved the way for several other programs, including adult English classes, coordination of a summer class (METAS), installation of nearly 70 fire alarms in our community with support from the Red Cross and volunteers, and monthly free book distributions from the Columbus library.
Despite the upheavals caused by the pandemic, our commitment to assisting the community persists. Though my personal circumstances have shifted due to family matters, preventing me from being as active as before, we remain dedicated to extending whatever help we can.
It’s immensely gratifying to contribute and offer support to those in need, sharing the assistance I once received when living in a foreign country.
